Jimmy Morales, a former TV comedian who did not hold public office ever won yesterday's presidential elections in Guatemala, taking advantage of public anger caused by a corruption scandal deepened distrust of voters in the political establishment.
The 46chronos Morales won by far the center-left rival and former first lady Sandra Torres in the second round of presidential elections, although it has no political experience and some of the ideas may seem eccentric to some.
At the headquarters of the center-right party of Morales, the Front National Convergence (FCN), the fans erupted in celebration with the announcement of official results give victory with a rate approaching 69%.
Voters expressed widespread dissatisfaction with the political class in Guatemala, which was augmented when a supported by the UN investigation into a customs scandal worth several million dollars last month led to the resignation and arrest of former President Otto Perez.
