European tsunami warning device to be installed and the Corinthian Gulf
A new experimental low-cost device for recording sea level, to provide early warning of upcoming tsunami, scientists developed the Joint Research Centre (Joint Research Center-JRC) of the European Union. The first four devices already installed in October in Spain and Portugal (two each), while another 16 will be installed in the Mediterranean. According to the JRC, one will soon be placed in the Western Gulf of Corinth, in collaboration with the National Observatory of Athens.
The new device Inexpensive Device for Sea Level Measurement (IDSL) measures the water level in real time. Measured every five seconds and the data transmitted to the JRC hosts. The data is immediately available for analysis, and access to a special website.
