Russian plans for military base in the Kurile Islands

Russia plans to build a military base in the Kurile Islands, a group of islands in the Pacific occupied by Japan at the end of the Second World War, said today Russian Defense Minister Sergei Soigkou, according to Interfax news agency.

The move is likely to worsen Russia's already fragile relations with Tokyo, which claims the Southern Kurile, known in Japan as the Northern Territories.

The dispute is so acute that Moscow and Tokyo still have not signed a formal peace treaty after the war, according to the Athens agency.

The Soigkou also said, according to Interfax that Russia makes or plans to build a series of new military bases in the Arctic, including bases in Wrangell Island, the island Kotelny Island and Cape Schmidt.

"You keep it secret --echoume practically create a base in Novosibirsk islands, the island Kotelny Island. It is a large military base, there was no such during Soviet times," said Soigkou.
