"The crisis in Syria alone (...) led to more than four million people in other countries. It raises major challenges for many countries such as Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq, "Ban said before journalists.

Inside Syria, nearly eight million people need urgent humanitarian assistance, he said.

"25% of the Lebanese population is now Syrian refugees. There are over two million refugees in Turkey, 1.5 million in Jordan, 300,000 in Iraq and several in North Africa, Egypt, "added the head of the UN.

The civil war raging in Syria since 2011, with government forces fighting against rebels and extremist organizations including the Islamic State.
