Legalized euthanasia in California


Euthanasia was legalized in California when Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill, despite the vehement reaction of some religious organizations and other groups where the rights of persons with disabilities (PwD).

The law is based on similar legislation in Oregon and allows doctors to prescribe drugs that will bring the end of life of patients, provided that two doctors co-sign that a person has only six months to live and that the patient is of sound mind.

In a rare move reasons for signing a law, Brown, a former student at Catholic priests School, said he carefully considered the pros and cons of the measure, which makes California the fifth US state to legalize euthanasia for patients in last stage of an incurable disease. The five states that have "adopted" the law is outside of Oregon is Washington, Montana and Vermont.

"I do not know what I would do if I died in a prolonged and excruciating pain," said Brown. "I'm not sure but it would be comforted to be able to look at the options that gives me this law. And I would deny this right to others. "

The bill passed the House of Representatives in September and expected signature of Governor to be legalized. According to the law, put into effect on January 1, it is a felony to press someone to request or get on drugs.
