Over one million people fleeing poverty and wars in the Middle East and Africa, arrived last year in Europe. Although the number of refugees and immigrants in 2015 was twice that of the previous year, the number of unaccompanied minors quadrupled, according to data released by Eurostat.

Of the 1.26 million people who sought asylum in the EU last year, one third were minors.

Four out of 10 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum in Sweden. In this country some seek to step up controls as suspected adults pretend minors to ensure the protection otherwise the authorities would refuse them.

Eurostat data specific to applications for asylum to persons "are considered to be unaccompanied minors". This means either that the country authorities accepted the age declared by the applicants or that their age was confirmed in other ways themselves.

Over 90% of those who traveled alone, without a parent or guardian, were boys. Of these, half were aged 16-17 years. 50% came from Afghanistan and 16% from Syria.

After Sweden, the main destinations for unaccompanied minors were Germany, Hungary and Austria.
