The request of four Turkish soldiers for asylum was accepted by the German authorities, according to a publication of the magazine Der Spiegel, which will be released tomorrow.
Four of them include former Colonel Ilhammi P., who served as Commander of the Ankara Military Academy at the time of the attempted coup, and was accused by the Turkish government as one of the leaders of the attempt to overthrow Tayyip Erdogan .
The decision to grant asylum means in practice that there is no longer the possibility of expulsion of those persons to be tried in Turkey with accusations of betrayal and participation in a terrorist organization.
The decision of the German authorities, however, is expected to re-burden the already tense German-Turkish relations, especially since the case of Ilhammi P. has been discussed repeatedly during the meetings of German and Turkish officials in recent months. According to Spiegel, Tayyip Erdogan had proposed to former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to "exchange" the Turkish military with Die Welt's German correspondent Denise Eugene, who has been detained for almost one year by the Turkish authorities. The German side rejected the proposal.
At a meeting with "Der Spiegel" journalists, Ilhammi P. expressed concern at the risk of his detection and abduction by Turkish intelligence services while in Germany while, as he said, German police recommended him to be particularly attentive . However, he wants to return to Turkey, but he has to wait until "Erdogan finally leaves".
