At least 38 dead in Europe from the cold wave


At least 38 people have died, most in Poland, the cold spell affecting Europe since the end of last week, although it is now beginning to recede.

This cold spell came from Scandinavia caused many traffic accidents, as happened in France, where four Portuguese were killed and about 20 injured in a traffic accident that occurred on Sunday.

On the same day 10 people died from the cold in Poland, where the thermometer remained consistently below -20 degrees Celsius in some areas, today announced the Government's national security center (RCB).

Other 10 people had already died Friday and Saturday in the country because of the cold. According to weather forecasts, temperatures are expected to improve in the coming days in Poland, while remaining below zero.

At the same time in the Czech Republic the cold wave has killed at least six people on Friday, who were the majority of homeless, authorities said today. The four of them lost their lives in Prague, where the temperature dropped to -15 degrees Celsius and the other two, one of which was a Slovak, in Brno and Karvina, in the eastern part of the country.

The cold wave has begun to decline in western Europe, although today goes cold in Italy where two new deaths announced by the press, a 82chronou, who was found dead in his home, which had no heating, near Brindisi, in southern Italy, as a 78chronou who died after the fall, caused by malaise felt because of the cold.
