In 2017, it was the most costly year in times of natural disasters in the US, as the cost of successive hurricanes and huge fires is estimated at $ 306 billion, according to a report by the Ocean and Atmosphere Service (NOAA) released today.
Sixteen of these natural disasters caused damage of over $ 1 billion each, something unprecedented in time, says NOAA. The previous record was recorded in 2005, with losses or losses of $ 215 billion mainly because the US was hit by hurricanes Katrina, Vilma and Rita this year.
Fires in the western US, and especially in California, are estimated to have caused $ 18 billion of damage. This is three times higher than the previous recorded record.
Hurricane Hurley, who drowned Texas, caused $ 125 billion in damages. It was, in terms of cost, the second worst natural disaster after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The $ 90 billion loss came from Hurricane Maria who hit Puerto Rico while Hurricane Hirma, who swept through the Caribbean and Florida, has caused $ 50 billion of damage.
NOAA also notes that one should look at 2011 to find 16 natural phenomena that caused damage of at least $ 1 billion each in a single year.
