M. Schultz: The Cyprus problem is one of the most important problems in the EU
The full support of the European Parliament -and the same personally to the ongoing negotiation process in Cyprus, expressed its president Martin Schulz, who is visiting Nicosia and met with President Anastasiades.
"The Cyprus problem is one of the most significant problems facing the European Union," he said. Schultz after meeting with k.Anastasiadi. The solution to the Cyprus problem, he noted, and the reunification of an important member state, "would be a sign of hope for the European Union at a time of deep crisis at multiple levels."
I am here, added Martin Schulz, in order to know, to understand and to help and now I understand much better the situation. He also argued that especially in the last year observed "incredible progress" in talks on the Cyprus issue and assured that the European Parliament will contribute to achieving a solution to the extent that it deserves.
Mr. Anastasiadis featured paramount contribution of the European Parliament in the efforts for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. Welcoming Martin Schulz in Cyprus, he said he briefed him on the progress of negotiations, adding that "agree that the Cyprus problem is a European problem and its solution must be in line with EU principles and values."
He pointed out that the Cypriot Government is following with great interest the process of the Progress Report on Turkey, which will be discussed next month in the European Parliament plenary.
He stressed president N. Anastasiadis, to send a clear message to Ankara that "it's time to meet its obligations towards the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus to unfreeze funds and to advance the accession process."
