Cumhuriyet arrests of executives: We will not surrender

The Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, which supports the secular character of the Turkish state, was released today with the headline on its first page "will not surrender", a day after the director and about ten executives were arrested on charges of supporting the failed coup of July.

Dozens of people held vigils to protest the arrests in front of the newspaper's offices in Istanbul, some wrapped in blankets as they slept on benches while police patrolling the barricades outside.

The European Union and the United States condemned the move against Cumhuriyet which is a pillar of the secular establishment in the country.

Prosecutors accuse executives of the newspaper, one of the few media that continue to criticize the president Tayyip Erdogan, of committing crimes against Kurdish fighters and the network of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric who lives in the US.

The authorities accuse Gulen being behind the attempted coup of July 15 when the military rebels attempted to seize power by killing more than 240 people. The Gulen, who has aftexoristei in the US since 1999, denies any involvement.

Repression that followed more than 110,000 people were fired or were suspended and 37,000 detained, causing Western allies criticism and human rights organizations fear that Erdogan uses the coup attempt to crush dissent.

"Even if the address and the authors of Cumhuriyet arrested, our newspaper will continue its fight for democracy until the end" refers to the editorial in which arrests are characterized as the beginning of an effort to close the newspaper.
