M. Draghi: Populism has weakened European integration

The spread of populist movements threatens European integration and efforts to find uniform ways of tackling immigration, security and other common concerns, said ECB President Mario Draghi in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais published today.

In some of the most striking comments lately about political developments, the Draghi said the main concerns of European citizens are "now migration, anti-terrorism security measures, defense and border protection."

"These are all transnational cases that require a joint response. European integration is the right answer, but it has recently weakened, partly due to populist movements, "he added.

The Draghi did not name specific parties. However, a number of movements has caused upheaval in the political scene, including the British UKIP and the National Front in France.

Meanwhile, the Draghi warned that political uncertainty debates about Britain leaving the EU will increase as ongoing.
