Yemen: Almost a thousand deaths from the cholera epidemic

The cholera epidemic in Yemen, a country torn by a war that escalated two years ago, has cost the lives of nearly 1,000 people, a senior UN official said, regretting that "humanity is a victim" of "politicians" Purposefulness.

"Time is pushing to save people who are killed (in hostilities) or die of hunger, and now cholera complicates even more things," noted the United Nations Coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGovern.

McGovern also pointed out that efforts to tackle cholera are extremely difficult "due to lack of resources. There is a need for immediate action, "during a press conference in Amman, the capital of Jordan.

The UN's action plan has a budget of € 1.8 billion, but only 29% of the funds needed have been gathered by the Member States, McGovern said.

According to the same UN official, over 130,000 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Yemen and 970 people have died from the disease, half of whom were women and children.
