Austria: Fears of a humanitarian crisis challenge after the Vienna decision


By the European Union and the Balkan countries expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis challenge, within a few days, among the refugees in the so called Route of the Balkans, following yesterday's decision of Austria to allow daily entry to only 80 asylum seekers, as mentioned Community today sources in the Austrian Press Agency (APA).

According to EU sources, the concerns were expressed during last night's meeting in Brussels, EU officials-including President of the European Council Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and representative of the Dutch presidency with the leaders of Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

The meeting reportedly stated that "Slovenia is a victim of Austria," which criticized unilateral action contrary to the planned coordination of the Western Balkans, and this message will convey to the Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, the European Council President Donald Tusk before today's opening of the EU summit in Brussels.

Austria shall, from tomorrow, Friday, the upper limit of 80 per day, the number of asylum seekers that will allow entry into its territory, as well as the upper limit of 3,200 per day, the number of refugees and migrants crossing the country to other destinations in Europe as announced yesterday by the Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Miklos-Laitner, the coalition -with their Sosialdimokrates- conservative Popular Party.

Austria had decided last month that in 2016 will only receive 37,500 asylum seekers, over 90,000 had received last year and representing 1% of the Austrian population.
