Naples: Development soldiers to enforce order
The Italian government announced Monday that it will send 250 other soldiers in Naples as part of its efforts to address the spate of violence in the city, which has been plagued by a wave of crimes.
Police faced increasing difficulties in its efforts to impose order in the Naples area: already 12 people have been killed this year, in a wave of violent crimes attributed to a gang war for influence.
"As of today, 250 soldiers will take part in large-scale enterprises in Naples," said a statement issued by the services of the Italian Interior Minister Angelina Alfano.
About 900 soldiers have already been deployed and participate in operations to enforce the order in Naples, but local officials demanded in recent days further assistance after the murder wave - recorded by the authorities only three last week.
The Alfano explained that the mission of the military to be deployed as reinforcements would be to fight the war of gangs and the increasing crime.
Magistrates in Naples say the upsurge in violence in part due to the successful campaign against the action of organized crime and arrests of older, entrenched "bosses" of the Camorra.
This campaign created a power vacuum, seeking to meet new, more ruthless gangsters, explain the same sources.
