Washington has "credible information" that Russia supported the coup in Montenegro

The White House argued today that it has received reliable information according to which Moscow supported the coup attempt last October in Montenegro but failed.

A senior administration official blamed in Russia for this attempted coup that was to occur on October 16, the day of parliamentary elections in Montenegro. The statement was made while the US Secretary Rex Tilerson talked with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the Syrian crisis and announced just before the meeting of the head of American diplomacy, with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We are very concerned about the issue of Russian intervention in the October elections in Montenegro," said one official, who requested anonymity. But he added that there are "credible information" that Russia supported the coup.

The Special Prosecutor of Montenegro Milivoje Katnits had announced in February that "state bodies" of Russia were involved in the conspiracy that led to the ultimate goal to prevent the country's accession to NATO.

On Tuesday the US president Donald Trump gave the green light to Montenegro's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, an action considered a challenge for Russia. Later today, Trump will accept the White House Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.
