Georgia: Gunmen fired on opposition leader


Gunmen shot and wounded Alexis Petriasvili, a former minister and current leader of the opposition party the Liberal Democrats of Georgia, announced the country's Interior Ministry.

The armed attacks are rare in Georgia, but many opposition politicians have fallen victims of beatings in recent years. The country will be held parliamentary elections in October.

The Petriasvili, who was deputy foreign minister in charge of relations of Georgia with Europe and NATO, was wounded in both legs and was taken to hospital to undergo surgery, he told reporters the deputy the Free Democrats Nino Gkogkouatze.

The Interior Ministry said that the motives of the attack remain unclear.

The Petriasvili and Foreign Minister Maya Pantzikitze resigned from their posts in November 2014 in protest indication for the ouster of the government of the Defense Minister and former party leader, Irakli Alasania.
