Guatemala: At least two dead and 200 missing in landslide
At least two people were killed and 200 missing after a devastating landslide that occurred in Guatemala where at least 70 houses were buried under mud in a town on the outskirts of the capital, announced today the authorities.
The torrential rains have resulted in huge volumes of rocks and mud to drag everything in their path Thursday night in Santa Catarina Pinoula, a few miles outside of Guatemala City, announced a spokesman of the national disaster management agency.
At least 25 people were injured, according to the official.
Members of rescuers and soldiers digging in the ruins looking for survivors today while the authorities installed a shelter to offer help to the 50 people who lost their homes in the disaster, one of the worst to hit the country in recent years.
The heavy rains this year have claimed the lives of at least eight people in the country.
