UNHCR: 168.000 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe in September
Approximately 168,000 refugees and migrants sailed across the Mediterranean to reach Europe in September, registering a monthly record, announced Friday the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
This is five times the number of refugees and immigrants than was recorded last year in the same period.
For the UN agency for refugees, the fact that new arrivals remain at elevated levels underlines the importance to put in place as soon as the distribution program 120,000 refugees that Europeans agreed on 24 September.
The UNHCR also does not stop urging Europe to actually create reception centers, registration and screening of migrants in particular to determine how many of them are entitled to asylum in Europe.
The UNHCR predicts 700,000 immigrants who have sail the Mediterranean will seek refuge in Europe this year and at least another 700,000 in 2016.
Since the beginning of the year more than 520,000 people, mostly Syrians and Afghans have already made the circumnavigation, according to the UNHCR. About 3,000 have died or are reported missing.
