"Veto" raised by Austria in EU policy towards Turkey

Yesterday's threat that will block the joint communiqué of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels, the plan which, in his view, not sufficiently exercised criticism in Turkey, for which he demanded a freeze of accession negotiations made reality today Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurt, putting the afternoon the "veto" of Austria in the text of the conclusions.

With this development, and as not achieved the required unanimity in relation to the EU enlargement process, will no longer be a joint statement of the two-day Council of Foreign Ministers, but only an announcement of the Slovak Presidency.

According to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), the Austrian Foreign Minister said after today's consultations, that agreement within the EU exists only in what will not open more chapters in the accession negotiations with Turkey, as unanimity is required for opening further funds, but something which is opposed long Austria.

He expects that there will be now further discussions on Turkey, perhaps already the day after tomorrow the European Council Summit of Heads of State and Government of the EU, and considers that the gap was not solved and that the EU still does not have a clear position on the Turkey.

Already yesterday, the Austrian foreign minister, referring to the resolutions of both the Austrian Parliament, and the European Parliament, which clearly supported a freeze of accession negotiations with Turkey, stressed that it can not adopt a text, which is not made clearly the goal for reaction to what happened in Turkey.
