D. Tusk: It was the most "promising" EU-China summit

The most promising EU-China Summit featured European Council President Donald Tusk today's meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Kheiyang. "For me the most important result is what Prime Minister Li said yesterday that we need to find what unites us and not our differences. We found them but we need more time to get more accurate. It was the most fruitful and promising session in our history, "said Mr Tusk at a press conference which he conceded jointly with the Chinese Prime Minister and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the end of the session. The press conference was delayed almost three hours due to the debate centered on international trade and EU-China differences.

"I prefer long meetings, because short ones point to deep disagreements. In long meetings, leaders show that they want to agree. If not now, later, "ZK said. Juncker.

ZK Juncker specifically referred to the "worrying surplus production capacity" in specific sectors, particularly Chinese steel, the China-EU trade dispute for tariffs under Article 15 of the Protocol on China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Different treatment of European companies in China. "We managed to reduce the differences but we are still not at the point of agreement," the Commission President underlined. "WTO rules should be applied. The European side has stated its intention to move towards legislation in this direction, "noted the Chinese Prime Minister.

President Tusk also referred to the joint EU-China decision to step up their co-operation in the fight against climate change, following the US's "unfortunate decision" to withdraw from the Paris climate deal.
