Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) are the winners of the local elections held today in the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, the exit poll shows.
According to the exit poll of the ARD and ZDF TV networks, the CDU receives 34.5% of the vote, a percentage increased compared to 26.3% in 2012.
The Social Democrats of Martin Schultz (SPD) receive 30.5% and are weakened by this election match compared to 2012, which they secured 39.1%.
