The pope did not smile when he greeted Trab out of his office, while the American president said only: "It's a great honor."

An obscure encounter between Pope Francis and Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump arrived in the Vatican today, where he met for 25 minutes with Pope Francis, against whom he had expressed himself harshly during the election campaign last year.

The Trab was attended by the Archbishop Georg Gansuen in the Vatican courtyard.

The American president seemed awkward as he entered the small lift that led him to the third floor of the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope, Gansuen's escort and other officials.

Along with Trab was his wife Melanie, his daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared Kunsner, and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The two men posed for pictures, with the Pope remaining serious while Trab was smiling at journalists.

The atmosphere seemed awkward and perhaps due to the fact that in the past Pope and Trab have exchanged tough statements.

Pope Francis said last year that a man who thinks to build walls rather than bridges "is not a Christian," referring to the American president's intention to build a wall on the US border with Mexico.

Trab replied that the Pope is a "disgraceful" who represents all Catholics questioning his faith.

"Although, when the Vatican is attacked by the Islamic State, which we all know is the ultimate trophy of the IK, I can promise you that the Pope wishes and prays to be Donald Trump's president," he pointed out during the Campaign.

Originally, the American president did not intend to visit Rome during his tour, which was considered offensive by some in the Vatican.

When he changed his mind, the Vatican accepted to meet with the pope at 8:30 am Wednesday, an unusual day and time for visits, as the Pontiff meets with the public at St Peter's Square every Wednesday at 10:00.
