Earthquake of 6.6 degrees west of Chile
Earthquake magnitude 6.9 degrees recorded yesterday evening (local time) in northern Chile, without causing casualties or damage and no tsunami warning issued, said the National Emergency Office (Onemi). The earthquake, also announced by the Geological Institute of the United States (USGS), occurred at 22:54 local time Tuesday (1:54 Wednesday, Greenwich Mean Time).
According to the National Seismological Center, the epicenter was located 89 km. West of the city harbor La Higuero, in Coquimbo, about 400 km. North of Santiago, and had a depth of 32.7 km. Onemi had initially declared "state alert "saying that there is a possibility of a" small tsunami, "but then this warning was canceled.
For its part, the Warning Center Pacific Tsunami announced that the quake caused no tsunami risk. Under Onemi the quake caused no casualties or damage.
