Conflict in Germany on the integration after the vote of the Turkish people in the referendum

Shocked by the Turkish vote of Germany in favor of strengthening the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the April 16 referendum, many German MEPs have been in favor of tightening the rules on dual citizenship.

The latest unofficial results show that 51.4% of voters in Turkey approved the constitutional revision, while the figure for "yes" among the 1.4 million Turkish voters in Germany was much higher at 63%.

In the city of Hesse, in western Germany, the figure for "yes" was 75.9%, although some commentators point out that the participation in Germany has only reached 44%.

There are about 3 million citizens of Turkish origin in Germany, and some politicians have argued that the faith many have shown to the Turkish president shows the rejection of democratic values.

"Those in a liberal country like Germany who voted to abolish freedom in Turkey or be limited apparently have not accepted our values," said Christian Democrat (FDP) Christian Lindner, adding that the Turks in Germany must Respect its Constitution.

At the same time, prominent executives of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party were in favor of taking action.

"It is important to reverse the changes that have made it easier to obtain dual citizenship," noted Bavarian Christian Democrat MEP Stefan Mulier. The regulations were changed to the most favorable in 2000 and 2014.

For its part, and while remaining 5 months ahead of the parliamentary elections, the far-right party for Germany (AfD), which secures between 7 and 11% on the basis of the polls, advocated a total ban on the right to dual citizenship Turks.
