Thousands of former Taliban fighters may have entered Germany in the past two years along with more than a million migrants and refugees, Der Spiegel magazine writes today.
The German Federal Immigration and Refugee Agency (BAMF) briefed security officials that thousands of immigrants declared former Taliban fighters in the asylum claim process, the journal wrote.
The report adds that at least 70 Afghans are being investigated by the German Federal Prosecutor's Office although it is unclear whether all of them are suspected to be active members of the Taliban.
Six are in temporary custody and interviewed, and the next week are expected to begin preliminary hearings involving many others, the magazine adds.
So far there is no comment from BAMF or federal prosecutors.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, which has been criticized for allowing such large numbers of immigrants - especially after the many armed attacks last year linked to immigrants - expels groups of Afghans whose asylum claim has been rejected.
Merkel, which seeks her election for a fourth term on September 24, recently defended the increase in these expulsions by saying that all other EU member states are doing the same.
As she said, about 55% of Afghans were granted refugee status in Germany, while 45% were rejected.
