France: At least 18 people were injured by an explosion, possibly caused by gas explosion

At least eighteen people were injured today by a strong explosion possibly caused by a gas leak in a building in the center of Dijon (eastern France), said local authorities. Two of the injured are between life and death.

The blast occurred at around 5:30 GMT (8:30 GMT) in an old building. Noon rescue crews continued investigations in the ruins of the building that housed about twenty apartments to ensure that there are no other victims. According to the rescue services, the explosion was not followed by a fire, but a portion of the interior of the building collapsed.

The interim balance is eighteen wounded, of which both between life and death, twelve slightly wounded and four in shock, said an official of the prefecture, the Pauline Juan.

The explosion "is probably due to gas: be it accident or an act associated with suicide attempt caused the explosion," he told AFP the prosecutor of Dijon, Marie-Christine Tarar. He ruled out any possibility of a terrorist act.

Firefighters said the building was not connected to the city gas network, which also had been interrupted in the neighborhood.

On December 5, 1999, eleven people were killed and three injured in a gas explosion in a building in Dijon.
