Dozens of human rights defenders, including Amnesty International's director in Turkey, were brought today to a court in Istanbul to be questioned by a public prosecutor with an open possibility of charges against them, made known by the NGO.
Eight activists, including Amnesty Director for Turkey, Indil Escher, were arrested at the beginning of July during a cyber security training course on the island of Bujukanda in Istanbul.
A Swedish and a German instructor at this seminar were also arrested and detained.
As they are suspected of "participating in an armed terrorist organization" by the Turkish authorities, the 10 activists were led today before a prosecutor for the first time after their arrest.
"One of the two will either be finally released (...) or unfortunately these persons will be detained awaiting trial," Andrew Gardner, a special investigator for Turkey in Amnesty, told the court.
"This is a test for Turkish justice. Turkey will be in disgrace in the eyes of the international community if these activists are taken to jail because they have defended human rights, "he said.
