Europol today announced that 66 people have been arrested as suspects for horse meat trade unsuitable for human consumption and has seized bank accounts, real estate and luxury cars after an earlier research into a food scandal that has shocked European consumers.
Checks carried out in Ireland in 2013 showed that meat in some products sold as beef was actually 100% horse meat.
The Spanish police began investigating a network that slaughtered horses in Spain and Portugal that were stagnant or in a very poor condition for human consumption, falsified the relevant documents and exported meat to Belgium - a major exporter of horse meat in the EU.
Europol (European Police Office) announced that 65 suspects were arrested in Spain and the main suspect, a Dutch citizen, was arrested in Belgium.
"In Spain, 65 people were arrested and charged with crimes such as animal abuse, falsification of documents, impediment to justice, public health crimes, money laundering and involvement in a criminal organization," Europol said in a statement.
Research conducted within the EU revealed that less than 5% of all bovine products tested were found positive in horse DNA.
