EU: Turkey complains about "negative trend" in the rule of law
The European Union condemned currently a "negative trend" to respecting the rule of law in Turkey and "serious setback" for freedom of expression in its annual report on the country's progress on its path towards EU membership.
The report "highlights the general downward trend in respecting the rule of law and fundamental rights", said in a statement the European Commission, once the Union is negotiating with Ankara to improve their cooperation in tackling refugee crisis.
"After many years of progress in the field of freedom of expression, found great retreat in the last two years," says the European Commission, while welcoming the efforts linked to the reception and puller two million Iraqi refugees in Turkey.
At the same time, Turkey should de-escalate the violence in the country, to seek peace with the Kurds, also mentioned in the Commission report, as the Athens Press Agency reported.
"The Commission hopes to end the escalating violence in Turkey and return to negotiations for a lasting solution of the Kurdish case," he said before the European Parliament the European Commissioner responsible for enlargement Johannes Hahn.
"The new government which was formed after the early elections of November 1 should give an answer to these urgent priority issues", according to the Commission, whose report was originally to be released in the first half of October.
The publication was postponed until after the elections, which gave again an absolute majority in the Islamo-conservative party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Brussels is trying to persuade the Turkish authorities to take measures to halt the flow of refugees to Europe.
