Serbia closed the border for economic migrants

The Serbian government confirmed that it allows entry of economic migrants rather than just the passage of refugees from countries at war. Earlier the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that Serbian authorities allow passage only refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

As said Labour Minister Aleksandar Voulin, who handles immigration, the decision was taken due to the refusal of Croatia and Slovenia to accept immigrants from Africa and Asia whose countries are not at war. It is worth noting that yesterday Croatia and Slovenia closed its borders to all those who do not come from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan as the Athens Press Agency reported.

"We have to protect our country [...] will not allow entry to anyone who can not continue the journey to Croatia. Serbia is and will remain only a transit country rather than the country of final destination, "said a statement by Aleksandar Voulin.

Such statements did Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic noting that countermeasures prohibitions on crossing immigrants imposed Croatia and Slovenia were taken to avoid becoming Serbia collateral damage.

Mr. Stefanovic said in an interview with the television station B-92 that border controls have increased counterterrorism service and intensified cooperation with the authorities of other countries and especially with France.
