Thousands of people today demonstrated in Madrid to defend workers' rights and denounce corruption as part of Labor Day celebrations in Spain.
The march in downtown Madrid was organized a few days after the discovery of a new scandal that hits the ruling People's Party and concerns the abuse of resources by a public water company.
Podemos of the radical left, as well as Izquierda Unida, had called on their supporters to demonstrate not only "decent jobs" but also labor insecurity and corruption. "The most corrupt is Rahoy," the prime minister of Spain, wrote the placards held by the people in the Puerto del Sol, where the course ended at about 15:00 in the afternoon.
"This is the main problem in this country," explained Jose Martine, 59, a former employee of Bankia, the public bank that has been at the center of many scandals over the last few years. "Empty state funds," added his wife, Carmen Huareth, denouncing her cuts in education and health.
"The corruption we have in this country is unbearable, everything is connected with each other, and if there is corruption, the money is blown up and there are no resources to pay for what is important," said a 69-year-old former nurse.
