Brazil: Research on the election campaign of President Rousseff


The Federal Police of Brazil stated that it was conducting an investigation of irregularities possibly committed during the election of the president's campaign Dilma Rousseff in 2014.

According to the press office of the federal police, the investigation began on October 7, following a decision of the judge of the Electoral Court Zilmar Mendes.

The president declined to make any comment on the investigation.

The research aims to determine whether Rousseff and the fellow candidate, Vice President Michel Temer, abused their power during the election campaign and whether there was any illegality associated with campaign finance.

The initiation of the investigation may give impetus to opposition portion efforts to move dismissal process of President Rousseff in Congress.

These efforts have lost some of their momentum earlier this week, as President Rousseff and President of the House Eduardo Cunha concluded an awkward truce after both face the risk of being removed from their posts.

If there is a conviction, the electoral victory of Rousseff last October could be canceled.

However, the investigation and the trial is expected to take months, if not years, while the president has the right to appeal to the Supreme Court.
