EU: suspended for four months the sanctions against Belarus

The European Union gave the green light for the suspension of sanctions against Belarus for four months, but stressed that the may reinstate any time if necessary, announced Monday, the French European Affairs Minister Arlem Desiree.

We made a decision, in light of the release of many political prisoners after the elections in a calm atmosphere, although we expect the conclusion of the observers to take a more comprehensive decision. The decision taken was to reserve the right to re-impose sanctions against Belarus, but suspend them for four months to promote human rights, democracy, rule of law, said Desiree.

In the presidential elections Sunday Aleksandr Lukashenko, according to preliminary results, won 83.5% of the vote, securing re-election for a fifth term.

Earlier today, international observers from the OSCE criticized the victory of Aleksandr Lukashenko in the presidential elections, speaking of "significant problems".

It is clear that Belarus still has a long way to go to fulfill its democratic obligations, said the head of the OSCE mission observers, Ken Charstent, mainly citing irregularities in the 'counting and sorting "of ballots.

The EU and the US imposed before about a decade sanctions on Belarus because of prosecution by the Government to members of the opposition parties and the deprivation of basic rights and freedoms to the citizens of the country.

The Lukashenko insists the allegations are unfounded and that the pressure the government is meaningless.
