Scotland: begins preparation for the new referendum on independence
The decentralized government in Scotland is preparing to table legislation allowing to hold a second referendum on independence, while also continue talks on its position within the European Union, Prime Minister Nikola Stertzon said today.
"A second referendum on independence (Scotland) is clearly an option that needs to be located on the table and is actually on the table", he said in statements broadcast live.
"To ensure that this option will be valid within the required timeframe, will now take steps to ensure that there is the necessary legislation," he added.
Scotland voted to stay in the EU by 62% compared to 38% in a referendum Thursday, in contrast with Britain in total in favor of withdrawal of 52% versus 48%. This result justifies reopening referendum on independence, supports the Scottish Government.
The independence of Scotland from the United Kingdom had been rejected in 2014 by 55% compared to 45%.
