48,000 refugees in five days in Greece

The number of arrivals of refugees and migrants arrived in Greece soared to 48,000 in just five days until October 21, bringing the number of refugees arriving in Europe through the Mediterranean at 681.000, announced yesterday by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM ).

"Despite deteriorating weather, about 48,000 immigrants and refugees have passed through Turkey to the Greek islands, with about 9,600 people a day crossing the sea during the last five days," said IOM, referring to the largest number of arrivals It recorded over a week this year.

Mytilene continues to receive the largest number of refugees and migrants, which in the last five days reached the island 27 276 refugees.

The same period in Chios arrived 9.750 refugees and noted that while the island greeted about 300 refugees a day during the peak of summer, suddenly last week the island was faced with 2,000 arrivals a day.

According to IOM, the number of deaths of refugees at sea also increased during this last periodou.Parallila the regional coordinator of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Amin Awad, said the Russian air attacks and the growing battles around Aleppo in Syria caused a "dynamic displacement", with around 30,000 displaced people, but it brought both refugees leaving the country.

He stressed that the number of internally displaced Syria declined from 7.6 million people to 6.3 million, a decrease that can be attributed to refugee flows to Europe, and the fact that many are not counted.
