Frontex: Strengthening Greece and Italy with border guards from 19 EU Member States, but need more

Nineteen member states of the EU send additional 291 border guards for strengthening the Frontex Agency. The guards will be used in so-called hotspots in Greece and Italy. However with its Communication on 2 September, the Frontex had called 775 border guards from Member States of the EU and the countries belonging to Schengen, so be transferred to Greece and Italy and to assist in the registration and identification of immigrants in their borders.

Until the Summit last week, however, only six countries had responded to the call for human resources with 48 guards. As part of the Summit, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, called on member states to "fulfill their commitments" and to respond to the request.

"We are facing an immigration and refugee crisis. The Frontex asked Member States, for the first time to provide such a large number of border guards. I appreciate that they meet the highest number of employees ever offered, "said Executive Director of Frontex, Fampritse Ledger, hoping that it will finally achieve the goal of 775 border guards.

"Member States may continue to help, even though the deadline has passed," he concluded.
