NATO: Many members will maintain a presence in Afghanistan
Germany, Turkey and Italy are expected to keep the number of troops in Afghanistan at its current level, said Monday, senior officials of NATO, after the decision of the US government to extend the 14-year military presence in the country this Southeast Asia.
The occupation of the capital of a province of Afghanistan by the Taliban a few weeks ago raised concerns about the combat effectiveness of Afghan forces. The US and its allies in NATO now say they will be events, not timelines, those that will dictate the pace of the gradual withdrawal of foreign troops.
The Gen. Philip Brintlov, the supreme commander of NATO in Europe, said it has received assurances that Member States of the North Atlantic Treaty will maintain their present level the number of their troops in Afghanistan, alongside the 10,000 US soldiers.
Several of the countries that make the largest contributions we have already informed that keep it, said Reuters, the Gen. Brintlov.
In parallel, a second senior official of NATO assured that Germany, Turkey and Italy have expressed the intention to maintain the current level of their missions in the Afghan soil.
Unlike the US, NATO did not identify the date would end its mission in Afghanistan, which currently has 6,000 men from 40 countries, mainly Member States of the Pact.
The formal decision on this mission - which in theory has mainly educational - expected to be taken by the Foreign Ministers of the Member States of NATO in early December, according to a third NATO official.
